Ahead of the Curve: Two Years at Harvard
Business School Reprint Edition
by Philip Delves Broughton (Author)
ByStella Carrieron
December 20, 2016
This book Ahead of The
Curve: Two Years At Harvard Business School by Phillip Delves Broughton caught
my attention because of the author sharing his journey of giving up a very
comfortable lifestyle in Europe for an uncertain one. I have my sights set on
online components of a few state universities andor possibly some community
colleges towards a second bachelor’s degree (for budgetary reasons). However, I
must make it clear that I am coming from a positive place of being content with
my place of employment when reviewing this book. With that out of the way, this
author candidly shares his journey of attending Harvard while also making time
for his wife and kids. He writes of how he and his wife Margaret spent time
together when they went to the pre-ball party of the Priscilla Ball with their
son Augie (page 92). Details such as a visit to the Yahoo company in Sunnyvale
California (page 123) and the Google company are mentioned (page 125). Broughton
also covers the process that he went through interviewing with one company
based in California and another in Boston (pages 140-144). Broughton also
included a story of an accomplished classmate who attended Harvard with a
scholarship and tuition from her employer as well as a guaranteed job upon
finishing her MBA. This classmate admitted to the author that multiple people
thought she was crazy for leaving an investment banking job for a marketing
department job that was half the pay of her banking job (pages 145-146).
Helpful details are given on being deliberate about living where you want to
live and why a person benefits from striving to minimize how often careers and
specializations are changed if possible (pages 197-198). I must also make it
clear that I’m reviewing this book unsolicited and for free (and as a unique
way for me to get in touch with the ambitious and self-confident persona that
helped me become class valedictorian in 8th grade).

This review is from: Getting What You Came For: The Smart Student's Guide to
Earning an M.A. or a Ph.D. (Paperback)
I purchased Getting What You Came For, The Smart Student’s Guide
To Earning A Master’s or PH.D. by Robert L. Peters, PH.D. due to my own
interest and determination to take more college classes related to my
professional aims. I was fortunate in being able to successfully complete my
first bachelor’s degree within three years (I started during the of fall
semester of 2009 and completed my first undergraduate degree program by
December 2012). However, I reluctantly admit that I arrogantly believed that
obtaining my first bachelor’s degree within 3 years and my 8.5 year military
experience would be sufficient in obtaining a government or private sector job
that pays at least close to what I made as an E-5 in the United States Navy. In
my newfound humbleness, I’m more than aware (without needing to be reminded by
my critics) that I must think and act more strategically to stand out from a
large sea of a talented crowd of men and women in the Washington D.C. who have
more professional experience in certain popular career sectors and/or those who
have attend highly ranked and/or well-known universities/colleges. Therefore, I
was eager to purchase this book that contains among the following insightful
details: Pages 57-72: making sure to be realistic about which schools to apply
to for admission(fortunately, I am lucky/thankful to have been accepted into my
1st choice dream school and the advice does match up with the expectations that
I had to consider). Pages 159-174 cover information pertaining to thesis
committees. Additionally, pages 319-358 (chapter 24)touch on details related to
the helpfulness of deciding/sticking with a career path and ways to request an
appointment with professionals already employed in student’s chosen career
field. This book is worth it just for chapter 24 alone because it includes
tailored advice for both grad students and non-grad students who have just
chosen to take more college classes related to their dream job (even if they
have already obtained their bachelor’s degree and are simply taking more
classes at another college outside of where they received their first
undergraduate degree). For those have yet to complete their bachelor’s degree I
would gently recommend books by Cal Newport.

I
confess that I simply purchased Fabulosity: What It Is and How To Get It by
Kimora Lee Simmons after images and the title of the book flashed in my mind.
I had previously thought of purchasing this book before and acted on an
intuitive whim due to the fact that she parlays an image as an ambitious
success. I admit that I do not know if she projects this regardless of what
her publicists/public relations reps portray her as. However, she does
generously share in the book what she did to achieve her dreams and admits
that one of the members of her entourage does PR. However, I would think it
is common knowledge that many rich and famous celebrities have
publicists/public relations representatives working for them behind the
scenes. The following is some of the fascinating information in this book:
Work and Power Chapter (pages 59-77): She mentions some details of her own career trajectory and ways to go about creating your own opportunities (rather than waiting for someone to let you in through the front door, metaphorically speaking). Pages 131-145 (Image and Body): Information is written on ways to feel more powerful and fabulous while building up a persona on a budget plus other tidbits. Romance and Lifestyle (pages 193-225): The author mentions what she has seen among her female friends trying to have a happy love life. Details are also shared on what happened during the early stages of the relationship between her and Russell Simmons. Positivity and Sustainability (Pages 243-255): I really enjoy the fun tip she shares on expanding your world when traveling out of the neighborhood is still a dream (page 250). Of course, there is much more uplifting information in this book. |

Blogging For Writers;
How Authors & Writers Build Successful Blogs by Robin Houghton contains
information for aspiring and current writers such as;chapter five (content is
king, what makes a brilliant blog post on page 72), Some website examples of
authors who allowed their blogs to be shown (pages 94 and 95), Other Good
Online Communities For Writers (pages 120 and 121). What I like about this book
is that even though the information seems to be tailored a little more to those
who are going to write under their real name, there is also information that
aspiring writers who plan on using pen names can take away such as How To Be
Found In Searches (pages 98 and 99).
